My Tie

Yes the name is dumb. Yes I just edited Don the beachcombers original recipe for a Mai Tai. Shit taste good and the old man would have enjoyed it so I’m personally proud of it.

2 Oz Aged Rum
0.5 Oz Luxardo Apricot Liquor
0.5 Oz Orgeat
1 Oz lime juice
3 dashes of Elemakule Tiki Bitters

Shake and strain over crushed ice and then float about 0.5 Oz of dark rum on top.

Garnish is a slice of apricot and a cherry (Or an orange slice and cherry if apricots aren’t available)

So this cocktail is strong yes. I will say that an aged Jamaican rum is ideal though if you can just find one that’s nice and flavorful with some vanilla you’ll get the flavor right. The Luxardo Apricot is just what I’ve found that is as potent with the sweet apricot flavor without tasting like sugar water.

Orgeat is just delicious. Whatever type you can acquire will work as long as it’s got that tart sweetness.

Now the real secret was the Bittermans Elemakule tiki bitters. They are fun and spicy with just enough bite that they add something to this cocktail that is hard to match. You can make it without them but its like taking the soul from this beast.

As far as dark rum I prefer Meyers but I’m sure there are other options that will work just fine. I’ve used Bacardi’s in a pinch and honestly it wasn’t as bad as I’ve heard people say it is. Kraken technically could work as well though I do think the vanilla on that one is too much for this drink.
